The Eastern Sun Emirates

Everyone has a master. That's just life in the Eastern Sun Emirates. It's probably the same everywhere. If you're a commoner like me, finding an Emir that values a steady hand with a rifle, or a gentle touch on a Heavy Gear's control yoke, is the best way to get out of the farms and factories and into someplace where you can have a little power, even if it's only at your master's sufferance. I try to stay out of the politic unless the boss tells me to, though.
- Sergeant Marcello Goris

Welcome to the ESE

Me? I'm just here as a hired gun. A few cycles ago, when I was just a kid, maybe I'd have gotten involved in fighting for one emir or another who promised to make things 'better.' Some of my friends did that, some of them even made out. Maybe they'll hire me next?

Things are calming down now. The civil war is over... The interpolar war is done... But I hear the CEF are coming, so I gues there's work left to be done.

The Eastern Sun Emirates is a rarity among the nations of Terra Nova: a feudal government where a small upper class of nobles governs the lives of countless commoners. The commoners are not slaves, but many don't see any way to escape their fate as they have massive debts that tie them. The ruling nobles, the Emirs, cover a wide range of views from brutal dictators to reluctant statesmen seeking to change the system from within.

The ESE is still recovering from a civil war that devastated the league's industry and gave the Southern Republic cause to send in MILICIA troops to maintain order in many cities. The war was started when the insane ruler, patriarch Oliver Masao, declared his last remaining relative would inherit the throne. While the civil war has ended and the new Patriarch is generally much kinder and less chaotic than the last, life in the ESE is still difficult.

An Eastern Sun Emirates Guard force is generally the private army every Emir is obligated to build and maintain. As such, these forces can vary widely in size and composition. Some Emirs may focus on elite Gears to give them a powerful crushing fist to defeat opponents while others may equip forces of infantry and lgihter gears to maintain peace and garrison territory.

In Heavy Gear Blitz, forces from the Easter Sun Emirates have three major rules that make them attractive to gamers. The first is the 'Honor Guard' rule that allows a specific Combat Group to be taken outside the normal Priority Level rules and makes a related type of combat group a core choice. Another rule allows an ESE force to take several older Heavy Gear models. While these units are not as powerful one-on-one as the more elite Gears, an ESE force can overwhelm opponents with numbers. The third rule represents the ESE's unusual makeup as each Emir can have ties to other forces anywhere on Terra Nova. An ESE force selects another faction it has ties to and can take a limited selection from that faction. An ESE force might field Northern Grizzlies or Peace River Coyotes to represent the Emir's political allies or just Gears bought at outrageous prices on the black market.

An ESE force offers hobbyists a great opportunity to customize forces. As each force is an Emir's private army, there is a lot of altitude for paint schemes, markings, and modeling. The ties with other factions allows a few models from other factions to be incorporated and allows for an even more diverse and interesting force.
